Dear SWP family,
Greetings in the Lord. I would like to report to you on the progress of the two wells funded by the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Parish, CA. The first and second wells are being constructed at Msugua-Hanang and Mfumbu in Singida region respectively.

MSUGUA-HANANG PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Msugua-Hanang is the village located at Singida rural district The GPS coordinates of the centre of the well are 4.58339833S and 34.87518333E. The population of this community amounts to 1,973 people. The villagers’ main economic activities are farming and animal keeping.

Currently the community does not have access to clean and safe water. In addition, the number of deaths related to use of contaminated water is reportedly high.

The general objective of implementing this well project is to provide clean and safe water to the villagers.

PROJECT PROGRESS

The construction of this well started some few days ago and the great work has been completed:
1. Site visit and formation of water committee 2. Hydrological survey 3. Production and conveyance of materials to the project site 4. Digging 5. Construction of slab Pump installation and handover of the well to the beneficiaries will be done today.

Subject: Pump installation at Mikese stesheni community

Dear all at SWP,

Many greetings from SWLD and the people of Morogoro. Today we have successful installed the pump at Mikese stesheni water project. Our activity of pump installation collided with a village meeting, therefore many people did not attend the ceremony. But the village chairman and the pupils were will to come and represent other community members in receiving a new well. During installation and handing over of the new well the chairman, Mr. Kalungwana and pupils from a nearby primary school came to say thank you to the donors on behalf of all community members.

At SWLD we also very grateful for the gift of water that transform the lives of our people. Water is the main factors towards improved livelihood. School children revealed to us how they suffered in the past to walk for so many miles in search for clean water. They are happy that through this new well that will be history of past.

In this email I have attached some pictures taken during pump installation.

Thanks a lot,
James

Subject: Water project at Mbuyuni community in Morogoro

Dear all at SWP,
I am writing to let you know that we have conveyed the materials to Mbuyuni community in Morogoro. Digging and construction works begin tomorrow.

Site description:

Mbuyuni is about 64 South East of Morogoro city(65357S 375204E). The population of the area is about 1250 people, mainly subsistence farmers. In the past this village did not have clean water. Two years ago the village chairman wrote a letter to SWLD to ask for clean water. We kept this village in the waiting list. After we received the funds from SWP we decided to help this community among others in our list.

Site inspection, geographical hints, hydrological survey and data from key informants supported that there is availability of underground water. The community is in great need of clean water. Earlier on, the villagers informed us that over 50% of the population suffered from water borne diseases because of drinking unclean water. Also, the villagers used to walk for more than a mile to get water to nearby communities.

Initially, this well project was to be done at Doma-maharaka community. However, it was found that the site at Doma-maharaka could not be accessible for now due to uncleared bush that hinders penetration by lorry to bring the materials to the site. We have asked the villagers to clear the bush so that we can pass to bring materials in the future. The next site, which could also be considered for this project was Kipunguli community, but the designated site for well at Kipunguli has acres tomatoes which have not yet been harvested by the villagers. It was wise to wait until the tomatoes are harvested next few months.

Due to the factors above SWLD decided to help Mbuyuni community for now instead of Kipunguli and Doma-maharaka communities which were initially proposed to be among recipients of the wells donated by the Parish in Pasadena. Doma and Kipunguli can wait for future project funds while logistics are made to access the sites.

In this email I have attached a few pictures taken during conveyance and site visits.

Thanks a lot,
James
