Synod of Bishops

General Assembly on the Synod on the future of the church, to be held in Rome from October 4 to 29, 2023.

“The Assembly addresses the  overarching question of the Synod: How does this “journeying together,” which takes place today on different levels (from the local level to the universal one), allow the church to proclaim the Gospel in accordance with the mission entrusted to her; and what steps does the Spirit invite us to take in order to grow as a synodal Church?

This work is based on what emerged from listening to the People of God as presented in the Instrumentum Laboris and the previous documents.”

What is the Instrumentum laboris (IL)?

It is the fruit of the discernment that began with the consultation of the People of God at the local level. The fruits of this consultation were collected at the diocesan level and then summarized and sent to the Bishops’ Conferences or Synods of the Eastern Catholic Churches. These then went on to Continental Assemblies.

Based on all the material gathered during the listening phase, and in particular the Final Documents of the Continental Assemblies, the Instrumentum laboris (IL) was drafted.

Our parish participated in the process in 2022 and the results are on our website!

Fingerprinting

Archdiocese of Los Angeles fingerprinting procedures

The Archdiocese provides fingerprinting services free of charge and works with the California Department of Justice to have these fingerprints submitted and scanned by the appropriate agencies. Anyone in the archdiocese who has regular contact with minors or vulnerable adults, whether in a paid or volunteer position, must be fingerprinted before they can begin work.

Pastor’s Message

Message from Fr. Mike

Dear Parishioners and Friends in Christ,

As we approach the end of the year, we pause to reflect on the 365 days of 2025. While a standard year in its length, 2025 will undoubtedly be etched in our collective memory. It has been a year that, despite beginning with profound adversity, ultimately highlighted the deep bonds of our community.

The devastating wildfire at the start of the year brought immense loss, particularly to many of our parishioners and school families who lost their homes. This tragedy is an incident from which recovery will take significant time and effort. Yet, in the face of this suffering, we witnessed the best of our community as we unite with compassion and generosity to support those affected.

Though the wildfire caused an interruption to our planned yearlong 75th Anniversary celebrations, it did not extinguish our spirit. After few months of hiatus, we resumed with a powerful Parish Mission and a dedicated week of Holy Hour. This culminated in the joyful celebration of our 75th Anniversary on September 14th. This milestone allowed us to gratefully acknowledge 75 years of God’s grace and honored the legacy of the foundational Pastors whose dedication shaped our parish: Msgr. Timothy Crean, Msgr. Augustus Moretti, and Fr. Gerard O’Brien.

If our historical records are accurate, this Christmas marks our 75th celebration of the Nativity in this parish. It is with this spirit that I extend to you a heartfelt MERRY CHRISTMAS.

May Christ, the light of the world, bless you and all those dear to you with the eternal gifts of love, hope, and peace.

May the year 2026 be a year filled with contentment and joy.

I look forward to welcoming you to the New Year,

Fr. Michael Ume

Pastor

Support Your Parish

Although our church doors remain closed, Assumption has been very active. We have expanded our online presence, continued with outdoor Masses and a Communion Distribution, and our ministries continue to meet virtually. We continue to ensure that our parish remains operationally viable, especially while Mass attendance is still limited.

Your parish is dependent on your generosity which helps us to continue to reach out to those most in need. We need to keep the parish in solid working order and pay our bills that continue during this extended uncertain period. As a reminder, we introduced online giving via Faith Direct which provides a great benefit to our parish.  Information is available on our website and there is no charge to you to give. We are most grateful for your continued giving and we look forward to serving you as we prayerfully move forward. Thank you to our 57 parishioners who have already signed up for Faith Direct.

The Coronavirus Relief Act Law expanded the charitable giving deduction to taxpayers who do not itemize and lifted the cap on annual contributions for those who itemize for the 2020 tax year. Please consult with your tax preparer for further details.

Maintenance & Repairs Report – Month of September

Donations through the green envelopes found in your monthly envelope packet, Maintenance & Repairs designated on the memo line of your check, and in Faith Direct, are restricted for use towards our Church Maintenance & Repairs. These donations remain 100% in our parish and are not subject to an Archdiocese assessment fee. These funds go directly toward paying for our church facility upkeep, maintenance and improvements, and the utility bills.

We had 3 fewer families participating this month versus August 2020. Previously, we had delayed some projects while donations were down due to Covid 19: however, we need to proceed on some much-needed repairs and maintenance. This past month, we repainted Msgr. Crean Hall which had not been painted in over 10 years. The pictures were in a previous bulletin.

Please consider donating to this much needed fund via online banking, Faith Direct, mailing, or dropping your donation through the mail slot of the rectory office.

Here is a look at the month of September 2020 Maintenance & Repairs collections versus our actual expenditures:

Funds collected from green envelopes                 $ 7,897

Repairs, routine maintenance, utility expenses $(19,056)

Shortfall for the month                                       $(11,159)

Families Participating                                                 118

(green envelopes, Faith Direct, or indicated on check)

Thank you for your continued donation!
