Monsignor Bob Gipson’s Priesthood

Monsignor grew up in Glassell Park, CA, his home parish is St. Bernard’s. When he was in high school, one of the priests in the parish asked him to think about becoming a priest. He had always admired his parish priests, and saw them as an example and inspiration in his life. After a period of discernment, he entered Our Lady Queen of Angels Seminary and then St. John’s Seminary. He was ordained on April 30, 1962.

His first assignment sent him to St. Charles Borromeo in North Hollywood for six years, he then spent one year at St. John Baptist de la Salle in Granada Hills before moving to St. Raymond’s in Downey. At St. Raymond’s, he spent nine years as Chaplain at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital before being named Pastor of St. Raymond in 1979. He was named Monsignor in 1995. St. Raymond’s Parish Hall was named after him in 2006. In 1998, Monsignor became pastor at St. James the Less in La Crescenta, where he met Fr. Gerard. In July, 2006, Msgr. was welcomed into the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish as a senior priest.

Monsignor has enjoyed every minute of his ministry; especially the time spent ministering to the people of God. Beginning July, 2011, Monsignor will retire in sunny Palm Springs after 49 years in the priesthood. We thank him for his dedication to the Assumption Parish family and we wish him a long and happy retirement.

On April 2, 2012 at the Chrism Mass, Archbishop Jose Gomez welcomed & acknowledged those Archdiocesan Priests celebrating their Golden Jubilee (50yrs) and Deacons celebrating their 30th Anniversary of Service to the people of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Monsignor Robert Gipson was among one of the golden jubilarians. Click here to watch the video clip.
