Curriculum Overview

The 4th grade students are provided with a challenging and stimulating learning experience filled with active engagement.  Our goal is to encourage students to become independent learners who are able to use their God given talents and critical thinking skills to solve complex problems.
Traditional resources are integrated with technology through the use of the interactive whiteboard, computers, and iPads to provide online access to research information and educational resources.

We have an academically rigorous curriculum with the following core subjects:

* Religion: Students deepen their understanding of our faith by learning more about the Catholic Church, vocations, and the Sacraments. We bring our faith alive through daily prayer, Mass every Wednesday, Advent and Lent Reconciliation, a Jesse Tree play during Advent, and participation in service projects.
* Language Arts: The students apply the skills acquired in the primary grades to a literature-based and informational text program concentrated on genres, reading comprehension skills and strategies, and vocabulary. Writing skills are expanded through thematic units such as: Personal Narrative, Informational essay(Mission report), and Persuasive essay with emphasis on structure, spelling, and the mechanics of writing.
*Math: The 4th grade concepts covered in Math are: all 4 operations with special focus on multiplication and long division, order of operations, algebra readiness, geometry, fractions, decimals, percents, as well as solving word problems in multiple steps and practicing Mental Math strategies.
*Social Studies: The primary focus is on California history and geography. Areas covered include the First Californians, the Age of Exploration, California Missions, the Gold Rush, and the Transcontinental Railroad.
*Science emphasizes both content and process skills. Students have regular hands-on activities after direct instruction in the following areas: life science, earth science, and physical science.
Integration projects are part of the curriculum in all subjects.
