Curriculum

First Graders Will Learn:

RELIGION–

  • Taking part and singing at weekly Mass
  • Living the “Golden Rule” (treat others like you want to be treated)
  • Bible stories about Jesus and how to live using His example 
  • Starting to do Service for others

READING and WRITING–

  • How to read fluently with comprehension
  • How to write a paragraph with proper punctuation
  • How to use the writing process with independence
  • How to use spelling & reading strategies

MATH–

  • Addition and subtraction, single and double digits
  • Place Value, one’s and ten’s place
  • Telling time to the hour, and half-hour
  • Problem solving & reasoning skills, using a math journal
  • Math concepts including geometry, probability, estimation, measuring, and number sense

SCIENCE–

  • Scientific method, including hypothesis & observation
  • Scientific concepts, including plants, animals, weather, seasons, matter and energy

SOCIAL STUDIES–

  • Social Studies concepts, including good citizenship, people’s lives long ago, map skills, community, and holidays
