Some people in our neighborhood are hungry! This actually surprised me a little. Over the last year, I have visited 6 or 7 Friends in Need – people who call our hotline for assistance. Hunger wasn’t much of a problem for them. We offered food and were usually turned down except for occasionally helping add to their food pantry so grocery money could be diverted to other expenses. Until a few weeks ago, when a couple called the hotline and a meeting was set up. They were living in their car. As soon as the Vincentians gave them a bag of food, prepared for the homeless, the woman ripped into a package of fig bars and started devouring them. She was obviously hungry. That weekend, we distributed 30 or so food bags in our caravan to the homeless along with toiletries and cold weather supplies. Time to spring into action.
We purchased food and gathered on Tuesday evening to assemble 100 food bags. We included protein, fruit and other healthy non-perishables. We will also join forces with the parish and school families to collect specific items each month for the Friends In Deed food pantry (see below). We will continue to supply staples, as they are available, from our Assumption Food Pantry.
Thank you for your continued donations, both monetary and non-perishable food. With your help, we will continue to seek out the marginalized and feed the hungry. God bless you for your generosity.
